Summary on Grant Application Form |
The initial work of the project will comprise baseline knowledge gathering on the design of tactile controls, both within the vehicle area and elsewhere. Drawing from current date, a 'pool' of control concepts for operating a sub-set of established and future functions of vehicles will then be generated. Specific experimental studies will subsequently aim to identify the characteristics of in-vehicle controls that reduce/remove the requirement for vision. The results of this research will enable a range of first iteration prototype controls to be built and then assessed in a driving simulator context. The results of these studies will enable second iteration prototypes to be built for inclusion within a demonstrator instrumented vehicle. In the final stage of the project, the usability of the novel controls in relation to current designs will be evaluated in on-road trials. An emphasis will be placed on those measures that directly relate to safety.EngProg\
