Summary on Grant Application Form |
An existing optical interferometric test rig will be modified to enable the ball on flat contact to operate in nominally zero spin conditions and for traction measurements to be made simultaneously with film thickness measurement.Friction and film thickness measurements will be made in this apparatus on a series of traction fluids at a range of entrainment speeds, slide roll ratios, pressures and temperatures. Tests will be carried out in both zero spin and finite spin contact conditions. Tests will be carried out from the full-film EHD regime through to the mixed lubrication regime. Some work will also be undertaken to map film thickness in mixed film lubricated contact for traction fluids. The results will be analysed in terms of existing EHD and mixed lubrication traction theory and supplied to assist in model development and in the interpretation of disc machine and variator traction performance.EngProg\
