Summary on Grant Application Form
The project will integrate and extend several strands of research on robust statistical parsing and automated grammar and lexicon induction, in order to develop and distribute a new parsing toolkit which will significantly extend the current state-of-the-art. The system will be the focus of further research on: 1) the development of fully domain-independent automated training regimes, allowing the rapid construction of an accurate parser for specific domain-dependant applications; 2) the integration of statistical techniques for disambiguation with related techniques for incremental grammar rule induction in the face of parse failure, allowing robust coverage of extragrammatical input; and 3) the evaluation and incremental improvement of such systems.
