Summary on Grant Application Form |
Nonequilibrium fluctuations pervade all areas of science. They lie at the root of many concepts of statistical physics & are responsible for eg chemical reactions, diverse phenomena in nonlinear dynamical systems,2-d electron systems, physiology, and social & economic problems. The huge progress made recently on fluctuations in nonequilibrium systems is not yet being fully exploited in treating problems in superfluidity where it appears to be relevant, eg quantum tunnelling, vortex creation in superfluid helium by ions or the kibble mechanism (modelling cosmic string creation in the early universe) or orifice flow, or the nucleation of the He-3 B-phase via the baked alaska scenario. A major aim of the conference is therefore to introduce key members of the low temperature and stochastic dynamics communities. Specialists in , eg the quantized vortex creation will meet - in most cases for the 1st time - with fluctuational dynamicists. Lancaster is an especially appropriate venue for this particular conference because it is (probably) unique in having a research group working intensively on both fluctuations & superfluidity. Because fluctuational dynamics is not normally taught as a separate discipline at universities, training of young researchers will also be an important feature of this meeting.
