This study is intended to develop methodologies to improve current modelling approaches to pollution dispersion in estuaries. Those agencies managing water quality in estuaries currently employ two-dimensional, depth averaged numerical models to quantify pollution dispersion in estuaries. Recent research has determined that the hydrodynamic processes in estuaries are more complicated than previously assumed and that widespread development of tidal fronts occurs in a large number of macro-tidal estuaries in Britain. There are a variety of tidal fronts but all are characterised by complex three-dimensional flow fields at their interfaces. The current models cannot calculate these flow fields in three dimensions, the spatial resolution of the cells cannot be varied across the model and the time-steps in the model cannot be varied to provide higher temporal resolution at the more dynamic stages of the tidal cycle. To overcome these limitations it is proposed to develop some hydrodynamic models to predict the genesis of the different types of fronts and to quantify the flow fields associated with them. To enable the development and validation of these models an integrated three-dimensional data set of observations of the surface and underwater flow fields will be employed.
