Summary on Grant Application Form
The value of an XML representation for application data (database relations as well as programming language datatypes), is becoming apparent in many commercial sectors, in particular in e-commerce. XML can be used both internally ( for archiving and interchange) and externally (if you can show the world your data in XML format, they are more likely to use it and access it over the Web). The problem we propose to address is that many more-or-less ad-hoc mechanisms are springing up to manage the translation from application internal data reprsentations to XML and back again. We propose instead to use emerging international standards, in particular the WC's XSLT and XML Schema proposals, to design and implement a uniform, declarative standards-based solution to the problem of distributed information interchange. We will provide a design based on the XML Schema document structure definition language and the XSLT transformation language to develop a mapping from XML to application data. The transformation will be done via a high-level intermediate representation such as an Entity-relationship model to facilitate modularity. In the reverse direction, the mapping from application data to XML, where more basic research is required, we will investigate and compare a number of different possible techniques.
