Summary on Grant Application Form |
The facilities requested will enhance the analytical scope of the Environmental Scanning Electron Microscope (ESEM) facility, provided through the 1997 JREI programme. The proposed research covers a wide range of dynamic experiments, at the microscopic level, involving tensile-compressive testing and interaction with/observation of liquids. The facilities will be utilised by a wide range of end users from the engineering and physical sciences, from within and outside the University, and will play a central role in basic and applied research, at both the postgraduate and postdoctoral level. Areas of study include oil/gas exploration/production, manufacturing (textiles, microelectronics, engine design), construction materials, natural fibres, and geotechnics (many of which are covered by the 1999-2000 EPSRC landscapes programme). All of these areas play a significant role in wealth generation within the UK. The ability to perform an increased range of dynamic experiments will encourage novel microscopical analytical techniques. Through the remote access facility, accessability to this state-of-the-art technology will be increased, and will also provide a means for the enhanced dissemination of knowledge through a wide spectrum of end users, including academic researchers, industrial users, and the general public.EngProg\
