Summary on Grant Application Form |
The desire to be able to model the entire world presents large problems since storage requirements would be vast and rendering unacceptably slow. Past efforts have only achieved very low levels of detail or have focussed on only small fractions of the Earth's surface. We propose to model the world using new and sophisticated compression techniques and by having a high level hierachical description of the world and its local environments. Our approach aims to minimize the data storage requirements to a tiny fraction of that required with traditional techniques with measurable error of approximation. At rendering time, the world will be built from the high level description into a form suitable for rendering at a particular location. At the display stage, techniques will be used to reject hidden objects at minimal cost where the description hierachy would permit rejection of entire continents, cities, towns and buildings etc. at once. Level of detail calculations and object decompression algorithms will be used so that flying from space into a single house would be possible. The project will permit several future extensions including landscape development, motion planning, population modelling, virtual heritage and climate modelling.
