Summary on Grant Application Form
This proposal outlines a programme of study on the development of solid oxide hollow fibre membranes and membrane reactors for methane coupling reactions. The phase inversion technique will be used for preparation of the hollow fibre precursor. The dense inorganic hollow fibre membranes having the mixed proton conducting characteristics will then be obtained through the calcination of the hollow fibre precursor, followed by the subsequent sol-gel coating/repairing process. For membrane preparation, the emphasis will be placed on the delineation of the relationships between the conditions of membrane preparation, membrane structure and performance in the methane coupling reactions. The variables examined include the types of dopant used in preparation of oxide powders, and fibre spinning and calcination conditions. The membrane structure is characterised by its permeability coefficient and its morphology, while the performance of methane coupling reactions in the hollow fibre membrane reactors prepared will be examined under different operating pressures, temperature and flow rates. The proposed studies are to be completed in two years.
