A century since their discovery, Grignard reagents are still widely exploited in organic and organometallic synthesis. As part of our studies into low coordination group 15 compounds we have developed a high yielding, regio-and steroselective preliminary study aimed at investigating the Grignard reagents [RP=C(r)MgX]. In a very successful preliminary study aimed at investigating the interaction of these with main group halides we have identified a number of similarities and is to systematically extend this study by utilising phosphavinyl Grignard reagents in the preparation of a variety of main group and transition metal complexes. These will be employed to prepare a series of saturated and unsaturated organophosphorus compounds, paying particular attention to compounds that have potential as ligands in the formation of catalytically active complexes. This is, however, not a catalysis based project and will mainly benefit phospha-organic and organometallic chemists who will profit from the wide range of synthetic techniques to be developed, and access to novel organophosphorus based compounds which so far inaccessible by other routes.
