Summary on Grant Application Form
Fluid-solid interaction problems involve inter-disciplinary studies relating to the fluid, flexible structure and their coupling mechanisms. The application of FEM in solid and CFD for fluid have achieved a high degree of sophistication and success in recent years. However, when these methods are used to solve nonlinear f-s interaction problems, problems arise. In solid mechanics, a Lagarangian description is adopted in which the variables describing the structure's motion are functions of the material coordinates fixed to each particle in the solid whereas, in fluid dynamics an Eulerian description is used in which variables describing the fluid flow are functions fixed in space. When large motions of the structure occurs, the material coordinates move from their original positions to new positions in space but the Eulerian coordinates do not change. This difference has to be treated for compatibility on the f-s interaction interface and free surface of the fluid. ALE technique has been used to solve f-s interaction problems by means of FEM both in solid and fluid domains. The proposed research study combines the successful and powerful FEM in solid and CFD methods applied to the fluid to develop a mixed FE-FD/FV method to calculate nonlinear f-s interaction problems.
