Summary on Grant Application Form
The concept of lean supply contains several specific proposed management practices for developing non-traditional competitive advantage via innovative ways of building and managing supply relationships. This research would address one of these practices; transparency. To achieve significant improvements in value generation through practicing lean supply, it is argued, it is necessary to share sensitive information. The customer must share information on its commercial, technical and operating processes with the supplier, in order to expect the same in return, in each case on the basis of an agreed rationale for such an exchange. The waste that is eliminated in this process is the missed opportunity for both sides to reduce cost and improve economic value addition in the transaction by sharing cost reduction and method improvement activities. This needs both parties to take and manage risk.Research at Bath has addressed this concept but, to date, few examples of its acceptance have emerged. The proposed research project will develop the concept further to deliver a methodology and practical management tools to use in support of transparency in inter-organisational relationships.
