Summary on Grant Application Form
Dr Day and Prof. Doctors have been collaborating in hydrodynamic research relating to fast ships for over five years, and have a number of joint publications. This collaboration started when Dr Day was based at UNSW, but has continued since he moved to Glasgow. Much of the joint research has concentrated on rapid robust and accurate methods of predicting hydrodynamic performance of high-speed ships at early design stage, using developments of linear theories. On a previous visit in 1998, the researchers developed a methodology for rapidly computing the near-field hydrodynamics of thin ships. This has since been applied to the prediction of pressure distribution around ships, and the near-field wave wake; however, in order to apply the methods to ships with transom sterns (which includes most fast ferries), the shape of the hollow in the fluid behind the ship is estimated using a rather heuristic virtual appendage approach. The proposed research will address this issue by investigating a development of the method for calculating the shape of this hollow in order to satisfy the appropriate boundary conditions in the hollow in a manner consistent with the assumptions of thin-ship theory.
