Summary on Grant Application Form |
The gas-liquid interface is a particularly dynamic and challenging system for study. A new method is proposed, applying established techniques, to study condensed phase chemical dynamics occurring near the liquid surface. Species present near the interface can be unambiguously characterised and their concentration profiles determined with increasing depth from the surface. The chemical processes can be generalised for application to a wide range of chemical systems, the prototypical example of proton transfer is discussed. Photoinduced proton transfer from or to the solvent will be studied and the influence of the solvent will be determined. The temperature dependence of the dynamics will be investigated, yielding insights into the fundamental nature of the reaction. Dynamics occurring in the electric double layer will be probed and compared with those occurring in the bulk phase. The uptake of gas-phase reactants at the interface and their diffusion into the bulk, combined with their influence on the proton transfer dynamics, will be monitored and investigated with increasing surfactant coverage and changing electric double layer potential. Further studies will aim to probe near-interfacial dynamics occurring in a range of chemical systems.
