Summary on Grant Application Form
This project is an exploration of the coherence of excitons in semiconductor quantum dots. It is not known if the linewidth of excitonic emission/absorption at low temperature is determined by the radiative lifetime or not. Likewise, the dephasing rate of the excitons at higher temperature or under high optical pumping is not understood. Furthermore, there is at present no consensus on the rate at which electrons relax into the quantum dot ground state. In all these areas, the wetting layer may play an important role.We propose to address these issues with single dot spectroscopy. We wish to probe the electronic structure and dephasing rates with both transmission spectroscopy and time-resolved spectroscopy. To measure the relaxation rates, we propose studying either highly charged excitons (or excited transitions of neutral excitons) where the final state of the transition is an excited state. In this case fast relaxation broadens the transition. Finally, we propose imaging the sample at low temperature with a spatial resolution of at least 250nm.
