|
It is important in the UK to have electrical power manufacturing and supply industries which are well equipped to tackle the challenges in the development of new products and systems. Through the ERCOS programme and more recently through Foresight activities EPSRC has been well aware of the opportunities and threats in this area and has worked to maintain continuity of support. The ERCOS programme encouraged collaborative research and was recently re-launched as a managed programme, Electricity Supply Research for the 21st Century.The ESR21 programme can make no direct provision for coordination and networking activities. However, these activities are especially important a this time of rapid and continuing change in the industry, during which many research challenges are appearing, and particularly since participation in ESR21 is now open to manufacturing companies, creating a new dimension for its scope and operation.This application is therefore for a Network grant, embracing the co-ordination activities within ERCOS and adding new activities. However, these new activities are designed to maximize the collective capability of the UK academic community in electricity supply research and to ensure that key groups in the community have the opportunities to become truly world class in their research, expertise and facilities.
