Summary on Grant Application Form |
A new generation of polymer electrode materials is proposed for investigation as lithium battery positive electrodes. The principle is charge storage via the known redox chemistry of quinones in lithium based electrolytes. Polyquinones to be synthesised will contain several carbonyl groups per ring in order to maximise the specific capacity, achieving a theoretical capacity of 350mAh.g-1, which is considerably higher than that of inorganic positive electrodes. The new polymers will be characterised electrochemically for consideration in the intended field of lithium batteries as well as other possible applications, such as oxygen and hydrogen diffusion.
