Controlled radical polymerisation is emerging as a useful, practical method for the synthesis of macromolecules. For instance, atom transfer polymerisation can produce polymers bearing a variety of unprotected functionality with excellent control of polydispersity. This network seeks to bring together more than 20 academic groups in the UK and Continental Europe working on the synthesis and characterisation of polymers using controlled radical methods.The transfer of ideas and expertise will bring about new collaboration between those who synthesise polymers, those who characterise them and users both in the industry and academia. Building multidisciplinary and multi-site projects would be much harder in the absence of a catalyst such as the proposed symposia and network meetings. We propose a yearly scientific symposium dedicated to controlled radical polymerisation to be supported in a number of ways by the network. Further annual network meetings will focus on the generation of new collaborations, especially those which are market-driven. This forum will also enable new EU networks to be established bringing further expertise to this economically important area. It is only through the creation of such networks that this already successful area of UK chemistry will flourish on the world stage.
