Significant interest exists in imaging UV light sources using visible-blind photocathode detectors. CsI is often used in this application, but problems arise since it is unstable. CVD thin film diamond possesses a combination of physical, chemical, optical and electrical properties which are very well-suited to its use as a UV photocathode. The aim of the proposal is therefore to develop this new application.One phase of the work will focus on the passivation of optically-active defects in CVD diamond, in order to achieve good visible-blind response. A second phase will explore alternative approaches to optimsing electronic transport properties between the front and back film surfaces, which is required for transmissive mode photocathode devices. A third crucial element, which is needed to achieve high quantum yields, is the formation of stable negative electron affinity surfaces, and suitable approaches will be studied in another phase of the overall programme. Finally factors controlling the spatial resolution achievable in UV imaging will be examined.
