Summary on Grant Application Form |
This grant is to fund a studentship and associated costs to investigate the use of multithreaded processor architecture to improve the performance of low-power high-performance embedded microprocessors. Previous research on multithreaded processors has focused on supercomputing applications where average case performance is important. Embedded microprocessors, on the other hand, require more predictable performance. We wish to investigate whether the increased concurrency offered by multithreaded architectural techniques can be used to give a predictable performance gain. This work is related to current projects at Cambridge which have industrial support. We hope that this more adventurous work will be of interest to the academic community and to the industrial community in the longer term.
