NdFeB-based alloys have attractive magnetic properties but their potential for commercial exploitation is limited by their low Curie temperature and poor corrosion and oxidation properties. These factors limit the use of ternary compositions to about 100*C.Oxidation studies, to date, have concentrated on the ternary alloy but, in this proposed research, a systematic study will be undertaken of the oxidation behaviour of higher temperature grades of magnets, containing Co and Dy. Minor additions that have been shown to provide enhanced corrosion resistance will also form a part of this study.The intention is to obtain a fundamental understanding of the oxidation behaviour of these magnets and the influence of the oxidation on the magnetic properties. This will allow predictions of the lifetime at high operating temperatures (up to 200*C).The use of (short-term) exposure at even higher temperature (500 to 600*C) will be made in an attempt to increase the iron grain size within the oxygen-affected surface zone. By this means, improved resistance to further oxygen ingress may result at the lower operating temperatures.
