Summary on Grant Application Form |
The programme is essentially a feasibility study of the possible use of ion implantation in forming patterned magnetic thin films. If successful it may point the way to an alternative route for fabricating patterned media. Although there are potential difficulties related to the sputtering effect of high flux ion beams (this may be a plus, however) and potential limits on the dose achievable, the process certainly merits a pilot study.Co-based alloy films will be used as substrates and will be implanted with Co or, possibly, non-magnetic ions to convert a non-magnetic substrate to a magnetic one and vice-versa. The magnetic properties i.e. hystersis properties and the compositions of the implanted and magnetic samples will be measured.Small regions of new samples will be masked off and implanted to determine the sputtering effect and to observe the physical and magnetic micro structural changes caused by the implantation. The samples will be investigated by magnetometry, AFM and MFM and electron microscopy.
