Summary on Grant Application Form |
In this project we wish to explore inhomogeneous fluid phenomena patterned on the nanoscale (a few 10s of nm). We shall make use of patterned substrates currently available from block copolmer film technology, where it has already been shown how to prepare striped patterns and arrays of circles as polymer films. We expect to achieve significant control over the pattern wave length, by diluting with one of the homopolymer constituents. We shall investigate the nature of thin film adsorption on patterned substrates with ellipsometric methods. In addition, dynamic contact angle measurements will be performed on the substrates patterned on the nano- to micron scale. The simulation part of the proposal will produce 1: a new database of thermodynamic and structural information on the static and dynamic wetting of patterned surfaces of use to both experimentalists and theorists, 2: will aid in the design of novel patterned materials through the collaboration described in this proposal and 3: generate a new simulation code (FlaN) for the simulation of the static and dynamic properties of patterned interfaces. Finally, we shall evaluate the ability of the block copolymer films to act as templates for the stamping method of generating SAM substrates.
