Summary on Grant Application Form
The overall aim of this proposal is to explore atom and particle trapping guidance and delivery in (a) free-space Bessel & Laguerre-Gaussian (LG) light beams and (b) holey photonic crystal fibre (PCF). The light beam work offers novel atom transport studies including an original method for extracting cold atoms from a magneto-optic trap along a LG beam. The work also offers the first prospects of observing atomic interference in Bessel light beams. The PCF-based work embraces a recent breakthrough in optical fibre technology: the world's first hollow-core PCF in which the light is genuinely guided, in a single transverse mode, in a hollow tube. This air-core photonic band gap fibre makes feasible for the first time practical atom and particle guiding over long distances (potentially metres) flexible light pipes. It also opens up many new possibilities. The funds requested will also be used to support further development of holey fibres for this work, including these new photonic bandgap fibres.
