Summary on Grant Application Form |
This programme of research is concerned with the exploration of the implication of optically pumped semiconductor laser for single frequency operation. The work builds on recent development in semiconductor materials design and diode pumped solid state lasers. The optically pumped semiconductor laser will produce a tuneable high power output with narrow linewidth diffraction limited beam quality in a compact and reliable form. The utility of the laser for laser coolong and trapping of atoms will be demonstrated. The laser is ideally suited for intracavity frequency doubling. We will demonstrate the use of the frequency doubled output of the laser in laser cooling of ion traps.
