Summary on Grant Application Form
The overall goal is the production of cold antihydrogen for spectroscopic investigations to probe fundamental symmetries of the Universe. The ATHENA collaboration is now on the threshold of achieving antihydrogen production at CERN's new low energy antiproton facility. The proposed programme is to facilitate this goal by fully commissioning the UWS positron accumulator constructed from funds provided by EPSRC (GRL/63266). Several upgrades need to be made to this instrument to allow positron plasma densities to be reached such that recombination reactions involving more than one positron can be investigated. This will allow ATHENA to identify the most promising antihydrogen production mechanism for future experiments where attempts will be made to hold the antiatoms in a magnetic gradient trap.
