Summary on Grant Application Form |
This proposal seeks to address technical issues relating to the use of polymer composites in the construction industry. The industry is conservative, multi-faceted and fragmented; as a result innovation occurs at a slow pace and needs to be supported by education and training across a wide spectrum. Thus, one important aspect is for the industry to be better informed of the capabilities and limitations of the polymer composite materials and to address these with long-term, targeted research. Current usage of advanced composites in construction is found in special areas of application. To increase and expand the usage of composites, certain issues must be addressed and resolved. These include: lack of national standards and guidelines, lack of familiarity with the materials in civil construction community, materials systems characterisation, durability, life cycle analysis and costings. It is proposed that this network will address the generic scientific/engineering issues underpinning the above issues as well as the problems associated with the use of FRP materials in various applications sectors. Specific activities to deliver the objectives are: visits to industrial sites and research laboratories; seminars/workshops/colloquia; CPD courses, organised in conjunction with learned bodies; a major international conference, which could perhaps become a standing conference.
