Solvation is a central phenomenon in chemistry. Key to understanding this process is elucidation of the solvent environment in the immediate vicinity of the solute. This information is difficult to extract from bulk solution studies, but is potentially accessible through the systematic spectroscopic study of solute-solvent clusters in the gas phase.A series of unique experiments is proposed here which focuses on the interaction between alkali metal atoms and small molecule solvents, especially water and ammonia. These clusters yield a metal cation, whose charge is balanced by the detached electron, in a tiny 'droplet' of solvent. Infrared spectroscopy, using a mass-selective double resonance technique, will be used to probe these clusters. Spectra in the O-H and N-H stretching regions will be recorded for cluster sizes ranging from a single attached solvent molecule through to an occupied second solvation shell (n>4). These will be used to deduce the structure of the solvent surrounding the cation, as well as extracting information on the solvated electron. This work will then be extended to two metal cluster solutes, Li2 and Li3, to determine if their size and non-spherical shape has a significant impact on the solvent structure.
