The project involves the synthesis of mono- and bis-complexes containing the groups M=NPR2 and MPNR2 for range of transition metals, using a variety of synthetic methodologies. These involve elimination of oxo or chloride ligands from high valent metal complexes via trimethylsilyl precursors. Oxidative addition of appropriate azides to lower valent labile complexes will also be investigated. Routes to related complexes containing MNPR, MNRPR2, MPRNR2 and the phosphadintrogen ligand PN will also be explored. In addition this work will be extended to complexes of diazaphospha ligands with a variety of substituents on the central P(III) or P(V) atom and on the terminal nitrogens. For comparison we will also explore the chemistry of N-bonded boraisodiazene complexes of the types M=NBR2 and M(=NBR2)2 using similar synthetic routes. There are few if any examples of the ligand systems described above and the first objective is to establish the structural and reactivity patterns using a combination of structural, reactivity and computational (DFT) data. A selected range of the new complexes will be investigated for their ROMP and metathesis catalytic activity with olefins and for Heck and Suzuki coupling reactions, and as potential ligands for the development of new Re and Cu based radiopharmaceuticals.
