Summary on Grant Application Form |
The gas electron diffraction method will be enhanced by development of techniques for (a) recording and (b) interpreting data for compounds with low vapour pressures, thus allowing study of unstable species at lower temperatures. This will require construction of inlet systems with increased cross-section area or with a reservoir of heated gas to allow greater flow of sample. Data for various nozzle designs and consequent diffraction zone geometries will be modelled, to find optimum conditions. Designs include large-orifice nozzles, slits, annuli and half-annuli. Programs will then be written for accurate deconvolution and interpretation of data obtained with such nozzles.Test inlets operating at room temperature will be constructed and data collected and interpreted. Nozzles also working above and below room temperature will then be constructed, and structures of key selected compounds, too involatile or unstable to be studied at present, will be determined.
