Undissolved gas exists in many seabed sediments, and has a significant effect on the undrained response to loading. Static undrained triaxial tests on soft silty clays containing gas suggest that the gas may be beneficial or deleterious, depending on the consolidation stress history. A recent programme of cyclic testing on soils has confirmed the conditions under which the gas increases the resistance to shear. The purpose of the proposed programme is to test soft soils (consolidated to 100kPa) containing gas, with the expectation that the more gas, with the expectation that the more gas they contain, the greater will be the reduction in stiffness and in cyclic failure stress levels. For samples tested at sufficiently low mean shear stresses that they do not reach failure, it is anticipated that the gas will reduce the subsequent monotonic shear strength. Such behaviour could be very important in the design of offshore foundations. The tests will be carried out in a new cyclic loading system with a precise feedback control system designed specifically for use with gassy soils, which allow any specified stress path to be applied at frequencies up to 1Hz.
