Summary on Grant Application Form |
The project will build upon the prior experience and research track record of the QUB research group. The plan is to produce a mobile system for automated assessment of road lighting (AUTOLIGHT) using CCD cameras, image processing, sensor fusion and optics. The target system will be capable of handling a lighting network of significant size to enable improvements in lighting effectiveness and overall efficiency. The research will include an analysis of lighting performance for the vulnerable user, as well as the measurement of a wide range of lighting parameters. The project will be of direct significance for improving local lighting, and will impact more broadly on the design and commissioning of new lighting schemes. Three main areas of work will be required:* Measurements of Lighting Parameters - detection of drifts in illuminance of luminance; levels for vulnerable users at complex junctions; low-cost glare measurement; glare of on-coming traffic.* Positioning and Results Management - sensor fusion for cross-matching of images; image-flow measurements of road surface position.* Detection and Classification of Lighting Zones - footway and multi-modal lane measurement; legacy lighting usefulness for new users; assessment of tolerance to weather effects; boundary determination.
