Summary on Grant Application Form |
The proposed research intends to integrate rapid developing laser technology into advanced grinding technology so as to develop a novel method to maintain a sharp clean wheel surface to achieve high efficiency grinding. Continually irradiating laser on the wheel surface to clean clogged chips may eliminate the requirement for coolant cleaning. Therefore it may reduce cutting fluid consumption, which would have great economical and environmental advantages. Combined with the touch dressing technique, the laser cleaning method would prove to be a high efficiency and environmentally friendly wheel cleaning method for grinding processes. The following outcomes will be generated from the research project.* Techniques for using digital image analysis for the detection of wheel loading* Knowledge of the mechanism of loaded materials removal from the wheel surface using the laser cleaning technique* Guidelines for the use of the laser cleaning technique in grinding operation* Industrial partners are expected to benefit through the application of knowledge gained from the research possessing the leading edge of manufacturing technology.
