In the proposed programme we will investigate fast magnetic switching by a number of complementary techniques. We will measure the time-response of continuous and pattered magnetic films as a result of nanosecond inductive pulses in a coplanar wave-guide configuration. This will extend work on spin precession in continuous and patterned films as a result of femtosecond laser pulses. Effects of both heating (in an external magnetic field-fast activated switching) and direct laser influence (possible spin precession) will be investigated. The characterisation will be done mostly by MFM, Although we plan to modify our membrane fabrication procedure so that the membrane is completed post-pulsing, to allow high resolution imaging of the remnant domain structure. As a small additional possibility we would also like to pulse samples with Pico-second electron bunches at the final focus test Beam, Stanford Linear Accelerator (SLAC). However, this is not guaranteed due to the current priorities at SLAC.
