The paradigm for personal computing is changing. While desktop computers and LAN technologies were the paradigm for the 1980's, portable computing solutions and wide-area networks are fast becoming the paradigm for the 1990's. In the next 10-15 years, the trend towards decentralisation of computing, supported by the development of pervasive broadband communications and the increasing miniaturisation of systems and components will mean that a new paradigm - the 'personal systems' or 'appliance computing' paradigm - will bring computing to a wider range of users in both domestic and working contexts. The current range of personal digital assistants, mobile communications devices and information appliances will become fully-fledged consumer technologies, built on new developments in ultraportable hardware, software and communications architectures.This proposal seeks funding to plan, develop and operate a Personal Systems Design Network which will draw together academic and commercial partners in the UK to facilitate the development of a research and development agenda for personal systems and appliances. The two project partners,UWE Bristol, through its The Centre for Personal Information Management,and Appliance Studio Ltd, are uniquely placed to succeed in creating a high value network which will have a significant role in placing the UK in a world-leading position.
