Summary on Grant Application Form |
Environmental Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is an environmental management tool increasingly used in governmental policymaking and company environmental management systems. Given the growing importance of LCA and related life cycle approaches in organisational decision-making, it is time that life cycle thinking is promoted to a wider audience of consumers in the marketplace. The purpose of this project is to build on a current EPSRC project that will result in an interactive CD-ROM software package on the life cycle impacts of waste management. The software package will be adapted to explore the life cycle impacts of a meal. Food has been chosen as the topic for this project as a result of specific interest in this type of package from East Sussex County Council and the Science Museum, and because everyone has an interest in food! The overall aim of the project is therefore to raise awareness amongst consumers about the environmental life cycle impacts associated with choice of foodstuffs in the marketplace. The interactive CD-ROM package will allow users to choose their own meal and investigate the environmental impacts of their choices. It will be developed in close consultation with the two partners on the project, East Sussex County Council and the Science Museum, in order to ensure it meets their requirements.
