Summary on Grant Application Form |
The project is concerned with further Advancing the highly successful primary schools robotics competition run during the beginning of this year and part funded by the EPSRC. In 2001 two competitions will run in parallel, one for primary schools and one for secondary schools, each with their own challenge. Names of interested schools already exceed four times last year. Each school will have 8 weeks to solve the challenge and will use the LEGO mindstorms kit as a common robotics base potentially with additional specially designed sensors. The challenge provides a learning tool for the children through experience and applied knowledge. In order to solve the challenge, they must transform their ideas into tangible realities and test their own theories. The task involves designing, constructing and programming a robot to navigate around specially constructed course and complete a number of tasks. Points are awarded for completing the tasks well as for design and construction of the robot. After the eight weeks, regional competitions will be held throughout the UK offering the excitement and energy of any competition. In July a grand finale will be held involving the top teams from the regional heats.
