Using sputter deposition we will fabricate and characterise sputtered thin films nanophase RE-FeB permanent magnets. The current literature on the subject concentrates on studies of the ternary NdFeB 2:14:1 phase. We propose to develop routes to highly textured nanophase films and take a lead from bulk REFeB materials by substituting with Pr and Co. Low temperature measurements will be a major emphasis as we study the effects of composition (Pr:Nd and RE:Fe ratios) and nanostructure on the spin reorientation in single phase and nanocomposite films. This may in turn have an influence on the exchange length and remanence enhancement. These substitutions allow increases in Curie temperature, anisotropy constant and hence coercivity. If time permits we shall also study more model nanocomposite structures based on multilayered soft/hard films. This may aid better understanding of the fundamental science of exchange enhancement phenomena. Data over a wide range of temperatures is essential here.
