Summary on Grant Application Form |
This proposal requests funding for a Stresstech AST Micro-Scan system for the measurement of Barkhausen noise, primarily for the assessment of surface integrity of ground surfaces. The equipment will be used predominantly by two Departments within Cranfield, Materials and Manufacturing Systems. It is envisaged that the provision of a Barkhausen noise facility will greatly enhance the usage and progress of research on two major grinding facilities, Edgetek and Tetraform, both of which are unique within Europe. The evaluation of surface integrity and residual stress in particular, is an essential requirement for all of the current grinding research. Barkhausen noise will compliment the existing well established techniques of surface characterisation such as X-ray stress measurement, which is slow and expensive. The Barkhausen method will provide more detailed information on every ground surface, enable greater machine tool utilisation and provide further confidence in the Barkhausen noise technique as a rapid and reliable method suitable for production environments.
