Summary on Grant Application Form |
Following commissioning of the UK National Medium Energy Ion Scattering (MEIS) facility at Deresbury we have conducted during the last 3 years a programme of development of the technique and its data analysis and explored the application of the method to a range of near-surface structural problems. The present proposal is aimed at building on this experience, exploiting the method to tackle types of problem for which we have found it most effective, but also exploring new application areas. The programme of exploitation covers three general topics: (a) use of MEIS to determine adsorbate-induced reconstructions of metal surfaces, especially of low atomic number adsorbates and partly linked to complementary studies by other methods (photoelectron diffraction, X-ray standing waves) better suited to locating the adsorbate but less sensitive to the substrate structural modification; (b) Investigations of the structure of surface alloy phases, and the structure and oscillatory compositional variations with depth of alloy surfaces, also with the emphasis on metals, and studies of metal-on-metal thin film growth; (c) exploration of the potential of MEIS to investigate structural problems associated with oxide surfaces, including the epitaxial growth of oxides and metals and the local structure of metallic deposits on oxide surfaces.
