Low pressure turbine blades in power generating plant can be exposed to cyclic thermal stresses in a corrosive environment during periods of off-load, shut-down and run-up. Corrosion fatigue is thus an increasing problem as more plant converts from continuous to two-shift operation to meet consumer demand. The research will investigate two advanced blading alloys exposed to different degrees of corrosive species in flowing wet stream. The selected environmental conditions will be closely controlled using highly sophisticated, purpose-designed recirculating loop systems. Damage accumulation will be assessed with and without the imposition if a range of cyclic stresses. Therefore, the individual and combined effect of cyclic loading and a corrosive species on the development of corrosion pits and subsequent fatigue crack initiation and propagation will be investigated. Detailed analysis of the data will enable a damage mechanism model to be developed, enabling the complexity of the corrosion fatigue process to be quantified. A greater understanding of the threat of failure in LP blades will identify solutions to limit cracking in practice and provide guidance on predicting the performance of plant.
