Sound quality targets for new vehicles are currently specified by jury evaluation techniques based upon listening studies in a sound laboratory. However jury testing is costly, time consuming and at present there are no methods for inclusion of customer expectations or brand requirements. The ability to improve or ideally replace they jury evaluation approach would be a major benefit to automotive manufacturers, indeed to manufacturers of any product where noise is important.This project will therefore use a neural computing approach to generate knowledge and tools to enable objective measures of a product's sound to be converted into a prediction of the subjective impression of potential customers without carrying out the traditional jury evaluation tests.The research work will fall into three main areas: preliminary work on pre-processing existing date and establishing the most suitable neural network architecture and inputs; carrying out experiments to provide sufficient data for the use of neural networks on the problem; and developing a neural network for predicting subjective customer opinion. Further work will disseminate results to the automotive industry and automotive, noise and neural network research communities and will also provide an implementation plan for the industrial partners.EngProg\
