The research will concentrate on developing a calibration algorithm based on the idea of comparing a real video image of a calibration phantom with a synthetic video image obtained by rendering a digital model of this calibration phantom. If the intrinsic and extrinsic camera calibration parameters used during the rendering process correspond to the true camera calibration parameters, then the synthetic video image should look very similar to the real video image. For this we will investigate a number of different similarity measures. The digital model of the phantom will be obtained by using a calibration phantom whose geometric shapes and dimensions are accurately known, ie using a CT or MR scan of the calibration phantom.The developed camera calibration algorithm will be evaluated with respect to its accuracy, robustness and precision. In addition, the camera calibration algorithm will be compared to other point-based calibration algorithms, which form an accepted gold-standard. For this purpose we will attach additional fiducial markers to the calibration phantom. The position of the fiducial markers in the 2D video images will be localised using a centre of gravity operator. The position of the fiducial markers in 3D physical space will be localised using an optical tracking device. We will compare these calibration estimates to those obtained by the intensity-based camera calibration algorithm.
