Summary on Grant Application Form |
This proposal is to a research program to develop new applications of fibre Bragg gratings to microwave and millimetre-wave signal processing. Our aim is to build upon and significantly extend our previous accomplishments in the current program under which we have successfully established that complex and high performance photonic signal processing elements can be fabricated using fibre Bragg gratings.Recently, research in the microwave photonics area has blossomed with studies looking at many issues and novel applications. With these new applications there are increasing requirements for high performance devices for microwave and mm-wave systems. Our previous work has clearly demonstrated that fibre Bragg gratings can be used to achieve passive microwave photonic processing devices offering high performance and flexibility. In our next stage of research, proposed here, we seek to overcome some of the problems on achieving more practical, smaller devices, to achieve more complex functionality with device cascading and also to study the possibilities of more active devices such as microwave sources exploiting fibre amplifiers. We intend to explore a number of novel fibre grating concepts to achieve our goals.
