IR ellipsometry is an exciting extension of conventional ellipsometry, with commercial instruments only recently available. It combines the benefits of depth resolution and interfacial sensitivity offered by ellipsometry with the chemical sensitivity provided by IR spectroscopy. The potential applications of IR ellipsometry are broad and virtually unexplored in polymers. With strong UK industrial support and collaboration, I propose to investigate two main topics: (1) chemical bonding at the interface between silicone coatings and corona-treated polymer surfaces in relation to adhesion (2) and cross-linking of silicones studied in situ as a function of time and temperature. (A feasibility study has already successfully shown that IR ellipsometry can identify the bond types in silicone coatings on poly(Carbonate) and poly(propylene) substrates.) In each application, IR ellipsometry will determine the type of bonds and their relative amounts in thin films and interfacial regions. Knowledge of interfacial bond formation will enable the tailoring of the adhesion strength of organic coatings, which are produced in large quantities worldwide. Knowledge of coating chemistry will allow performance to be optimised. The research is of strong interest to Dow Corning (silicone manufacturers) and UCF Films and DuPont Teijin Films (manufacturers of substrates). All three are providing funding and support-in-kind.
