The St Andrews Centre for Advanced Materials (STACAM) is an interdisciplinary environment comprising some 20 Academic staff from Chemistry, Geoscience and Physics, with a total complement of research staff and postgraduate students in excess of 50. The Centre is very well equipped for structural and physical characterisation of materials; however there is a need for improved magnetic characterisation facilities. Provision of new SQUID facility would further strengthen interdisciplinary activities, enhancing links between Materials and the Earth sciences and would enable new science in the areas such as nanotechnology and thin films. The research programmes that we wish to use this facility in are diverse, covering topics such as fundamental and applied magnetism, superconductivity, geomagnetism, palaeomagnetism, materials for energy technology, novel magnetic materials and magnetic characterisation of materials and crystals. The areas of application for this research are important, including such topics as thin film magnetic memory storage media, molecular magnets, battery materials and understanding climate history and pollution. The stability of the technique further enhances its ability to investigate small or dilute samples and allows detailed time resolved studies. Directional measurements are possible, facilitating studies of magnetically anisotropic samples, benefiting both applied and basic studies.
