Summary on Grant Application Form
Despite policies to reduce both the total amount and biodegradable proportion of waste being landfilled, there will still be a considerable need to landfill wastes in the foreseeable future. Such wastes will continue to be heterogeneous and contain an organic and inorganic pollution load that will require active management in engineered sites over a period of decades if not centuries. To improve the engineered controls and operational practices to minimise the long-term environmental impact of landfills, there is a need to continue to develop our understanding of the behavioural and properties of wastes and their impact on landfill processes. In particular, the presence and movement of fluids is of prime importance to waste degradation, gas production, leachate control, the in situ clean up of wastes and landfill stability. The programme of research will (1) characterise properties of wastes using the Pitsea production leachate flow, and vice versa. Benefits will include a better understanding of role of fluid flow in landfills that will lead to improved leachate control systems, and more effective techniques to control and reduce the polluting potential of wastes.
