Summary on Grant Application Form |
We propose the synthesis and characterisation of high temperature sulphide ion conducting ceramic materials. The proposed research will be a collaborative effort between the Departments of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering at Loughborough University. The project is well suited for the training of two PhD students. Materials isostructural to oxide ion conductors will be synthesised and subjected to a wide variety of characterisation techniques including in situ XRD, temperature programmed reduction/oxidation, AC impedance spectroscopy, DC galvanic cell measurements etc.One student will be based in Chemistry and will concentrate on the synthesis and crystallography of the sulphide ion conductors, the other will be working in Chemical Engineering and will carry out fundamental characterisation as well as applied testing of the prepared materials. These data will be fed back to the PhD student (Chemistry) in order to establish an information loop to rapidly progress understanding of the parameters that affect the sulphide ion mobility in these novel materials.
