Summary on Grant Application Form |
By comparison with their counterparts among the group 14, 15 and heavier group 13 elements, the chemistry of low co-ordinate boron ligands is a little investigated area of chemistry. This proposal sets out strategies for the synthesis of transition metal complexes containing borylene and boryl liagands containing two- and three-co-ordinate boron centres, respectively. Currently, transition metal borylene complexes are extremely rate; art of this proposal is aimed at reducing this shortfall through a range of synthetic approaches designed to bring about steric and electronic stabilisation of the low co-ordinate boron centre. The proposed study will provide a more definitive basis for resolving hotly-disputed issues of structure and bonding and for extension into studies of reactivity.Boryl complexes have been implicated in important organic transformations such as alkane activation and alkene hydroboration. The remainder of this project is aimed at probing the bonding present in these species, in order to provide a rationale for the unusual selectively and actively observed in certain reactions of boryl complexes and also to provide comparison of the various contributions to bonding with related borylene species.
