Summary on Grant Application Form |
A 3 year project is proposed to develop the capabilities of the spinning disc reactor (SDR) for the pharmaceuticals and fine chemicals industries. A consortium comprising 2 large pharmaceuticals companies, 4 fine chemical companies, a well known major equipment manufacturer, a specialist equipment manufacturer, an instrumentation manufacturer and a technology transfer SME has been assembled to collaborate with Newcastle University with input from members of the industrial consortium and build by Alfa Laval and Rosand Engineering. Fundamental modelling of the fluid dynamical nature of flow over a SDR will be conducted at Imperial College and will provide a basis for collating experimental observations from fundamental studies conducted at Newcastle University. This work will enable rational performance predictions to be made when new reaction schemes or more extreme operating conditions are being considered. The industrial members of the consortium will contribute to the work by carrying out case studies and detailed pilot studies on real industrial reactions. Results of these studies will complement the fundamental studies of the performance envelope of the SDR, extending those already conducted at Newcastle University during the Starter Award.
